History

Insco Distributing, Inc. (originally International, Inc.), was founded in 1958 by a small group of people dedicated to the premise of providing the customers with the best product, the best service and the best people. These six men with a total of $40,000 in start-up capital opened their business in a former tire-recapping garage with just 1,500 square feet. They cleaned and painted it the best they could to make it presentable to the customers. Stores were opened in Corpus Christi, Harlingen, and McAllen. The San Antonio headquarters moved to Martinez Street. At the end of the first decade of business there were four locations and 40 employees.

The company grew slowly but steadily. The geographic base expanded south to Brownsville and north to Austin. The name was change to Insco Distributing, Inc. (an acronym for International Supply Company). Space became a problem. The third San Antonio store was a 40,000 square feet facility that provided for more dock space for 18-wheelers, corporate offices and company inventory. Although that building seemed enormous at the time, it would be expanded by 20,000 square feet in just three years. By the end of the second decade there were seven stores and 50 employees.

The first twenty years provided the foundation for dramatic expansion in the third decade. New stores opened in Victoria, Corpus Christi, a fourth in San Antonio, Laredo, El Paso, Lubbock. The third decade ended with fifteen stores and 140 employees.

By 1993 the company grew to 20 locations with 200 employees. Stores ranged from Dallas to Brownsville and Victoria to El Paso. Insco trucks made weekly deliveries of stock from San Antonio to each of the stores. The original 40,000 square feet with four loading docks at Freedom Drive was expanded to 60,000square feet. Additional warehouse space was rented to accommodate the inventory necessary for the continued growth. The need for more space was satisfied with a new 213,000 square-foot facility on 15 acres in northwest San Antonio. At this writing there are thirty stores with 260 employees. The twenty-two loading dock are kept busy receiving inventory and distributing it to each of the thirty stores each week.
